About Discovery Limited
Discovery is a shared value insurance company whose purpose and ambition are achieved through a pioneering business model that incentivizes people to be healthier, and enhances and protects their lives. Its products and services provide the primary pathway for positive change at scale. Discovery supports this through strategic social investments, such as the Discovery Foundation and Discovery Fund, and strong systems of governance and accountability.
Discovery’s contribution is focused on health and healthcare, aligning directly with national and global imperatives for 2030. These include the National Development Plan and the United Nations’ call to action to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being, through the third Sustainable Development Goal, which has four focus areas with 11 commitments: Healthy Products and Services, Healthy Workforces, Healthy Communities, and Healthy Organization.
Discovery’s shared value insurance model delivers better health and value for clients, superior actuarial dynamics for the insurer, and a healthier society. Discovery’s unique approach has underpinned its success globally, with substantial new business growth and an impressive increase in normalized operating profit and headline earnings.
Discovery Limited was started up and initially established in 1992 as a small specialist risk insurer company with the support of Rand Merchant Bank. In the same year, Discovery Health launches the ground-breaking innovative Medical Savings Account, which puts clients in control of their day-to-day spending.
In 1997, the Discovery Vitality was launched. This is Discovery’s internationally recognized, scientifically proven wellness program. Two years later, Discovery was listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and on the following year, Discovery entered the life assurance industry and launched Discovery Life.
In 2002, Discovery Health launched the KeyCare Health Plans and entered the previously uninsured market – enabling people in this market to access affordable, quality healthcare.
Two years went by and Discovery entered the credit card market and launched DiscoveryCard, a VISA-based credit card that rewards members for being healthier. Also, earlier that year, Discovery Limited and Prudential plc entered the United Kingdom. They announced their joint venture and launched PruHealth, which offers protection products in the UK market, and was expanded in 2007.
The Discovery Foundation and the Discovery Foundation Awards were launched in 2006. The aim of the Discovery Foundation and Awards is to help support the South African government in addressing South Africa’s critical shortage of medical doctors and strengthen the nation’s healthcare sector. Through the Discovery Foundation Awards, Discovery Limited invests in the education of medical specialists.
Since 2009, Discovery has been expanding its operations outside South Africa. Throughout the past few years, the Organization had launched other subsidiaries such as Discovery Health Journalism Awards, HealthyFood by Discovery Vitality with PnP, Discovery Leadership Summit, Discovery Insure, and HealthID. By 2013, Discovery’s subsidiaries had become globally recognized.
Discovery’s main clients are large, and medium, and small-sized employers for health insurance, as well as individual clients who buy health and life insurance and investment products from Discovery. Through its repeatable business model, Discovery exports its intellectual property to other industries and markets, including the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Singapore, and Australia.
