Eskom is the largest electricity public utility in Africa and the largest out of all South Africa’s state-owned enterprises. It was established in 1923 by the government of the Union of South Africa in terms of a parliamentary act, namely the Electricity Act (1922), as the Electricity Supply Commission (ESCOM), also known as Elektrisiteitsvoorsieningskommissie (EVKOM) in Afrikaans. In 1986, the company changed its name by combining the acronyms in its two previous names, ESCOM and EVKOM, into Eskom which we know as up to this day.

There are numerous notable power stations that are operated by Eskom. These power stations include Kendal Power Station and Koeberg nuclear power station in the Western Cape Province which is the only nuclear power plant in Africa. Approximately, 95% of the electricity used in South Africa is generated by Eskom as well as approximately 45% of that used in Africa. The company’s Generation, Transmission and Distribution divisions all work together in generating, transmitting and distributing electricity to industrial, mining, commercial, agricultural and residential customers and redistributors.

Eskom Enterprises, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Eskom Holdings, aims to grow Africa’s industry in energy and improve life quality in the continent, including South Africa and the South Africa Development Community. It embodies sustainable non-regulated businesses in addition to the South Dunes Coal Terminal and Golang Coal companies in Richards Bay harbour in South Africa. These enterprises include:

  • Eskom Rotek Industries, Eskom Enterprises’ largest subsidiary was established to construct, maintain and transport equipment to support Eskom.
  • Eskom Uganda Limited, a subsidiary of Eskom that has been operating for the past 13 years and has experience in hydropower generation can support Uganda’s vision to give 80% of the population access to electricity by 2040.
  • Trans African Projects, an enterprise by Eskom that has reached as far as the Middle East and China in effecting designing solutions for transmission and distribution projects. It focuses on substation design, renewable energy solutions, network studies, consulting engineering and project management.
