Important Dates: Gauteng School Late Admissions For 2024

Important Dates: Gauteng School Late Admissions for 2024

Introduction

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has announced the important dates for late admissions to schools in the province for the 2024 academic year. Parents and guardians who have not yet secured a school placement for their children are advised to take note of these dates and follow the necessary procedures to apply for late admissions.

Key Dates

  • Application Period: 15 August – 15 September 2023
  • Placement Notification: 30 September 2023
  • Registration at School: 1 – 5 October 2023

Eligibility

Late admissions are available to learners who meet the following criteria:

  • Learners who have not yet been placed in a school for the 2024 academic year
  • Learners who have moved into the Gauteng province after the initial application period
  • Learners who have been granted a late admission exemption by the GDE

Application Process

Parents and guardians can apply for late admissions online or in person at their nearest district office. The online application portal will be available from 15 August 2023.

To apply online, parents and guardians will need to:

  1. Visit the GDE website (www.education.gpg.gov.za)
  2. Click on the "Admissions" tab
  3. Select "Late Admissions"
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen

To apply in person, parents and guardians will need to visit their nearest district office with the following documents:

  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Proof of residence
  • Learner’s academic record (if available)

Placement Notification

The GDE will notify parents and guardians of their child’s placement by 30 September 2023. Parents and guardians will be able to view their child’s placement status online or at their nearest district office.

Registration at School

Once a learner has been placed in a school, parents and guardians must register their child at the school between 1 and 5 October 2023. The following documents will be required at the time of registration:

  • Learner’s birth certificate
  • Proof of residence
  • Learner’s academic record (if available)
  • Proof of payment of school fees (if applicable)

Exemptions

In certain circumstances, learners may be granted an exemption from the late admission application process. Exemptions may be granted for the following reasons:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Family emergencies
  • Late arrival in the province

Parents and guardians who believe that their child qualifies for an exemption must contact their nearest district office for assistance.

Additional Information

  • Parents and guardians are advised to apply for late admissions as soon as possible, as placement is not guaranteed.
  • The GDE will prioritize learners who are in Grade 1 and Grade 8, as these are the grades with the highest demand for placement.
  • Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit the GDE website or contact their nearest district office for more information on the late admission process.

Conclusion

The Gauteng Department of Education is committed to ensuring that all learners have access to quality education. The late admission process provides an opportunity for learners who have not yet been placed in a school to secure a place for the 2024 academic year. Parents and guardians are urged to take note of the important dates and follow the necessary procedures to apply for late admissions.
