Job Position: Fire Officer
Location: Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa
A Fire Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of people, property, and the environment. This profession demands a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to public service. Here’s a more detailed overview of the responsibilities, qualifications, and skills required for the role:
Responsibilities:
- Fire Prevention and Inspection: Fire Officers are responsible for conducting fire prevention inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards. This involves inspecting facilities, equipment, and processes to identify potential fire hazards and implement preventive measures.
- Emergency Response Planning: Fire Officers develop and implement emergency response plans to effectively respond to fire incidents, chemical spills, explosions, and other emergencies. They coordinate with emergency services and train personnel to handle emergency situations efficiently.
- Firefighting and Rescue Operations: Fire Officers lead firefighting and rescue operations during emergencies, directing personnel and resources to contain fires, evacuate people, and mitigate risks. They must be proficient in firefighting techniques, equipment operation, and hazard identification.
- Incident Investigation: In the event of a fire or emergency, Fire Officers conduct thorough investigations to determine the cause and origin of the incident. They analyze data, gather evidence, and recommend corrective and preventive measures to prevent future occurrences.

- Experience: Candidates should have 2-3 years of experience working in an industrial fire department or a similar environment. Experience in firefighting, emergency response, and incident management is highly valued.
- Technical Expertise: Fire Officers must possess a comprehensive understanding of fire safety regulations, standards, and best practices. They should be familiar with relevant legislation, codes of practice, and industry guidelines.

Eligibility:
To qualify for the position of Fire Officer at Rheinmetall, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Higher Certificate in Fire Technology
- 2-3 years of experience working in an industrial fire department
- Hazmat Technician Certificate
- Fire instructor & Assessor/Train the Trainer training
- First Aid Level 3 certification
- Ability to function independently in highly pressurized and stressful environments
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of Fire Safety Bylaws, Disaster Management Act, Fire Protection Regulations, Fire Brigade Services Act, SANS standards & codes of practice
- Driving License, minimum code C1
- Must be physically fit, able to work at heights, in confined spaces & under limited visual conditions (subject to fitness assessment)
- Willingness to work standby duties as well as planned/unplanned overtime as dictated by working circumstances
- Computer literacy: MS Word, Excel, Power Point-proficient level (minimum)
