About Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA)

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is a city-owned company, or rather owned by Joburg City.

It is also an agency responsible for the design, development, repair and maintenance of Johannesburg’s road network.

Additionally, JRA is also tasked with monitoring the function of rainwater infrastructures such as bridges and culverts.

In fact, the maintenance of traffic lights and signs are also part of the agency’s responsibility.

JRA is one of the many “agencies” established by Joburg City to provide a variety of services that are more efficient in running a stable business.

The JRA, then, passes all repair and maintenance costs on the City Council.

The agency is run by a managing director and a board of directors who report to the City Manager.

According to the latest statistics released by Joburg City, the Johannesburg Roads Agency currently manages:

  • 1,561 traffic light installations
  • 12,551km of kerbing
  • 129,000 street lights
  • 3,943km of rainwater drains
  • 320 bridges
  • 7,100,000m of footpaths (33% in poor condition)
  • 7,224km of roads (5% in poor or very poor condition)

In the past, rainwater and road services were scattered throughout Johannesburg’s five councils.

As a result, this led to confusion about who was responsible for what and ended up with differing standards throughout the Johannesburg area.

Today, with the agency running, the idea that more roads will be built and maintained within the available budget is focused on one big umbrella.

Why Work at JRA

  • Good work-life balance
  • Training and employee development programmes
  • Bonus and incentives for achieving employees
  • Transport allowance
  • Room for growth
