The Gauteng Provincial Government offers a number of opportunities for young adults to hone their skills and embrace their talents. The Government also supports local and national organizations in conducting training services for all Gauteng residents. Skills Development Opportunities in Ekurhuleni
The City of Ekurhuleni aims to be an employer of choice by attracting highly-skilled people who will add value to the organization. The Ekurhuleni Government offers skills development opportunities to South African inexperienced young adults and interested employees, who reside in Ekurhuleni.
- Learnership
The Ekurhuleni Government offers learnerships to inexperienced young adults who completed a National Senior Certificate or Matric and strive to educate themselves further. The learnership is a structured learning intervention, which combines work-based experience with learning over a period of 12-24 months. It includes theoretical and practical workplace experiential learning. This can lead to an occupational related qualification registered on the NQF.
- Work Integrated Learning
The Ekurhuleni Government offers the Work Integrated Learning program, which is a 12, 18 or 24-month workplace experience program designed for candidates who have already completed an N6 qualification. The candidate needs the necessary practical experience to enable him/her to obtain a formal qualification.
- Internship
The Internship is an opportunity offered to young adults who have completed some tertiary studies and would want to gain work experience in a structured environment.
- Learners with HET HQF level 5 and above
This is a 12-month workplace experience program, designed for candidates who already have completed a NQF level 5 qualification that is relevant to employment in the Local Government sector, but have not yet gathered the necessary practical experience to enable them to obtain employment.
- Learners with past NCV and Vocational (TVET) qualifications
This is a 12-month workplace experience program designed for candidates who already completed NQF level 1, 2, 3 or 4 National Vocational Qualifications that is relevant to employment in the Local Government sector, but have not yet gathered the necessary practical experience to enable them to obtain employment.

Johannesburg Bursary
The City of Johannesburg Municipality is committed to provide skills development opportunities, not only for its employees, but also for the Johannesburg community members. The City is offering 100 bursaries to South African youth, who permanently reside in Johannesburg, to pursue full-time undergraduate studies in one of the following fields:
Actuarial Science, Build Environment (Architecture, Construction), Commerce, Communications / Social Media, Community Services, Curatorial Studies, Emergency Management Services, Engineering (all fields), Environmental Management, Finance (Accounting, Auditing, Small Business Management, Supply Chain Management, Treasury, Economists), Geo Information Science (GIS), Health (Nursing), Information Technology, International Relations and Protocol, Legal, Library, Local Government Science / Political Science, Logistics, Marketing, Medicine, Monitoring and Evaluation, Municipal Governance, Production and Operations Management, Quality Assurance, Public Management, Quantity Surveying, Real Estate (Property Management, Property Valuation), Regional Planning, and Sports Science.
The selection of successful candidates will be strictly on academic merit. Applicants are expected to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution. It is the student’s responsibility to seek admission with a tertiary institution.
The bursary is for study programs of no less than one year, and is renewable annually, based on academic performance / results. The bursary covers tuition and registration fees, prescribed books and/or study material and is limited to the amount of R 25,000.00 per academic year.

Automotive Authority Skills Development Programs
The Automotive Authority (AA) provides services related to South Africa’s roads. It promotes road safety to everyone who uses South Africa’s roads, through campaigns and participates in a range of projects relevant to the automobile and transport industry. Among these includes bringing to market the first crash tests for locally-sold vehicles. This move is useful to evaluate the safety rating of the vehicles.
AA offers accredited industry relevant training programs at the Automotive Authority Technical College, which is located in Gauteng and Western Cape. These training programs consist of theoretical learning that takes place in classrooms and hand-on practical training which takes place in the AA’s fully equipped training workshop. The AA works with its employers to increase the hands-on industry experience and employment opportunities of its learners.
Currently, there are three types of training programs offered at AA. These include the Nated Engineering Studies, RPL and ARPL, and Apprenticeships and Learnerships programs.
- Nated Engineering Studies
The Nated Engineering Studies Motor Trade Course is accredited by Umalusi / DHET. The course provides N1–N3 qualifications for school leavers. Within the course, you will be required to pass all N-levels in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, and Motor Trade Theory. These levels are offered sequentially. Levels N1 to N3 can be completed in one year as long as you pass each level. You will only need to complete one level at a time, after which you receive the certificate for the level passed.
- RPL and ARPL
The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) Trade Test will lead you to your Red Seal Certificate at the AA Technical College. This program is QCTO accredited.
The ARPL Trade Test caters for two trades: Diesel Mechanic and Motor Mechanic. Meanwhile, the RPL Trade Tests caters to four trades: Automotive Electrician, Automotive Engine Fitter, Diesel Fitter, and Diesel Fuel Injection Technician.
- Apprenticeships and Learnerships
Apprenticeship and learnership programs at AA Technical College are available to employers who would like to improve their workforce’s education. These programs are accredited by QCTO and MerSETA. The programs cater for three trades within the NQF: Diesel Mechanic (Automotive Repair and Maintenance for Commercial Vehicles) and Motor Mechanic (automotive Repair and Maintenance for Passenger Vehicles).
