What is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

The funding covers approved funded programmes at universities which are all undergraduate whole qualifications, i.e. degree and diploma.

What Does NSFAS Cover?

NSFAS provide the following benefits for successful candidates planning to attend a South African university:

  • Accommodation (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15,000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5,200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2,900 per annum for students in catered residences
Other opportunity:  Learnerships at Quest College of Technology

On the other hand, qualified applicants who wish to enrol at a TVET college will be granted the following financial assistance:

  • Incidental/personal care allowance R,900 per annum

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?

NSFAS is available for students who meet these categories:

  • South African citizens
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350,000 per annum
  • A person with disability whose combined household income is not more than R600,000 per annum
