In fact, you can apply for various purposes anytime and anywhere. Of course, as long as you are connected to the Internet, then you have the opportunity to take advantage of these opportunities easily.

Below is an overview of all the important services that the Western Cape Government provides that you may not know about.

1. Western Cape Gov Jobs

Through its “Jobs” web page, the Western Cape Government regularly uploads the latest information regarding job openings. Particularly, the jobs are scattered from all departments in the provincial government. For example, currently, Western Cape government jobs are available in the following departments:

  • Agriculture
  • Community Safety
  • Cultural Affairs and Sport
  • Economic Development and Tourism
  • Education
  • Environmental Affairs and Development Planning
  • Health
  • Human Settlements
  • Local Government
  • Premier
  • Provincial Treasury
  • Social Development
  • Transport and Public Works

Additionally, you can also register with the bursaries and internships that the Western Cape Government holds from time to time. Through these two programs, it hopes that residents can find what they like and what they enjoy doing to get the right career later.

If you have zero ideas on how you can apply to the positions, the Western Cape Government provides a guide and application process. Also, there are other resources you can use to enrich your knowledge in the career field.

2. Unemployment Insurance

Things can get rough when you are unemployed or unable to work because of illness, maternity or adoption leave. To ease the burden, the Western Cape Government specifically offers unemployment insurance for its needy citizens.

More specifically, the fund offers short-term financial assistance to the unemployed and the dependants of contributing workers who have died.

However, before you claim this grant, you must know whether you are entitled to it. The insurance applies to all employers and workers, but not to:

  • Those working less than 24 hours a month for an employer,
  • Learners,
  • Public servants,
  • Foreigners working on contract, and
  • Workers who get a government old-age pension/commission.

In fact, there are five kinds of benefits covered by the insurance:

  • Unemployment benefits,
  • Illness benefits,
  • Maternity benefits,
  • Adoption benefits, and
  • Death benefits.

You can claim this insurance online, and it is an easy-peasy task. But again, it depends on which benefit you are claiming. Therefore, to find out more about this programme and the procedure for claiming certain benefits, you can visit the “Claiming Unemployment Insurance” web page here.

3. TVET Colleges

If having a good-paying job or a business of your own is 1 of your goals, then studying at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college might be suited for you.

With a wide variety of courses to choose from, a TVET college education can provide you with all the necessary skills and knowledge you need for your career.

In fact, TVET colleges fall under the national Department of Higher Education and Training. Moreover, they are fully equipped to educate and train at a tertiary level and provide you with your pathway to career success.

In particular, TVET colleges focus on vocational and occupational education and training with aim of preparing students to become functional workers in a skilled trade.

There are 50 TVET colleges across South Africa, of which 6 are located in the Western Cape. In other words, this means that almost every major region in the Western Cape has a TVET College campus, including:

  • College of Cape Town for TVET (Central Metropole District)
  • False Bay TVET College (South Metropole)
  • Northlink TVET College (North Metropole)
  • West Coast TVET College (West Coast/Winelands)
  • Boland TVET College (Breërivier/Overberg)
  • South Cape TVET College (South Cape/Karoo)

And, thanks to the generosity of the government, 80% of the tuition fees at TVET are subsidised. Ultimately, you can read more about TVET colleges here.

4. Driving Licences

All South African drivers are required to have a credit card format driving licence. This is automatically issued when a new driver receives a licence. Therefore, the next important service of the Western Cape Government specifically addresses this issue.

Through this service, you can request assistance with any of the following needs.

  • Applying for a driving licence,
  • Renewing your driving licence, or
  • Replacing your driving licence.

In fact, these three services are available at the respective Driving License Testing Centers throughout the province. However, if you need full instructions on these services, you can find the information here.

5. Immigration and Citizenship

If you are a foreigner and you need to issue citizenship, you can take advantage of this important service. In fact, you can acquire South African citizenship in 3 ways; birth, descent, and naturalisation.

Besides, you can apply for permanent residency in South Africa through the immigration service of the Western Cape Government.

However, to make an application for a permanent residency permit, you must first submit a representation to the Minister of Home Affairs motivating why you should be declared not to be a prohibited person or an undesirable person.

Then, once you have received a positive response from the Minister of Home Affairs, you may submit an application for either a Direct Residency Permit or a Residency-on-Other-Grounds Permit.

Since these things tend to get confusing especially if this is going to be your first time, you should read as many of the resources as possible. For that purpose, you can get more information on the “Immigration and Citizenship” webpage of the Western Cape Government here.

6. Applying for a Passport

If you’re a South African citizen and planning on travelling to another country, you’ll need a South African passport. In fact, there are different types of passports, with different application fees for each type.

However, did you know you can now apply for your passport online? Visit the Western Cape Government’s “Applying for a Passport” webpage here to start your application. There, you can read more about the different types of South African passports, the fees of issuing one, and how you can get yours.
