Cluster: District Health Services

Salary: An all-Inclusive MMS Salary Package of Salary Level 12 R869,007 per year

General requirements:

  • A degree in a health-related field, registration with relevant professional council; a degree/diploma in health management; or a degree/advanced diploma in a management field.
  • At least 5 (five) years of management experience in the health sector.
  • Experience as a health service manager or significant experience in management in a health service environment.
  • Valid Code 08 driver’s licence.

2. Director

Cluster: Information Technology

Salary: An all-inclusive SMS Salary Package of R1,057,326 per year

General requirements:

  • A Grade 12 Certificate and relevant 3-year National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Information and Communication Technology/Computer Science at NQF level 6 as recognised by SAQA.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Must have 5-7 years’ experience in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), and 5 years of management experience.
  • An Honours Degree at NQF Level 7 and Project management knowledge will be advantageous.

3. Assistant Director

Cluster: Risk Assurance Management Services

Salary: R376,596 per year

General requirements:

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree/National Diploma in Auditing/Accounting/Risk Management.
  • A minimum of 3 years of operational experience in an Investigative/ Internal Audit/ Auditing/Risk Management environment.
  • Valid Code 08 driver’s licence.

4. Chief Director

Cluster: District Health Services

Salary: R1,189,338 per year

General requirements:

  • An undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) in Health or MBCHB.
  • Current registration with the relevant health professional body.
  • A minimum of five years of senior management experience.
  • Valid Code 08 driver’s licence.

5. Emergency Care Officer

Cluster: KZN Emergency Medical Services

Salary: R143,613 per year

General requirements:

  • Grade 12 Certificate with science subjects.
  • Basic Ambulance Assistant Certificate (BAA).
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Basic Ambulance assistant.
  • Proof of current registration with the HPCSA.
  • Valid driver’s C1 licence with a professional driving permit.

Below, we compile a list of district office profiles for each of the above, as quoted from the official website of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Health Department. So far, the district offices that most frequently offer KZN Health vacancies are the eThekwini District Office, Ilembe District Office, Umzinyathi District Office, and Uthukela District Office.

1. eThekwini District Office

The district health services at eThekwini District Office are jointly provided by the Provincial Department of Health and the Local Government authority. Particularly, the former is contributing 60% of the service and the latter is 40%. In fact, the Provincial Primary Health Care service in eThekwini has a number of services/programmes. Specifically, they need to be integrated within the context of the overall city plan. Also, it has to work together with the process of devolving PHC Services to the Local Government.

2. Harry Gwala District Office

Harry Gwala health district is in the southern area of KwaZulu-Natal. In fact, the population is estimated at 526,946. Moreover, the district is divided into four local municipalities (sub-districts):

  1. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma
  2. Greater Kokstad
  3. Ubuhlebezwe
  4. UMzimkhulu

3. Ilembe District Office

Ilembe Health District is situated at KwaDukuza. As a matter of fact, it is about 75km from Durban. In particular, the district comprises a small urban area and a remainder being largely deep rural. Furthermore, the district has a population size of 662,413.

4. UMgungundlovu District Office

UMgungundlovu Health District is the seat of the office of the Premier for KwaZulu-Natal as well as the provincial capital, Pietermaritzburg. Besides, the district provides a health service to 10% of the provincial population. Fascinatingly, the UMgungundlovu Health District was selected as a Pilot District to prepare for the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
