What is Old Mutual?
Old Mutual Limited is an investment, savings, insurance, and banking firm with operations across Africa. John Fairbairn established it in 1845 in South Africa.
In 2018, Old Mutual launched a new strategy known as managed separation, which involved separating its four companies – Old Mutual Emerging Markets, Nedbank, UK-based Old Mutual Wealth, and Boston-based Old Mutual Asset Management (OMAM) – into separate corporations.
Quilter plc (previously Old Mutual Wealth) was demerged, and its ownership in Nedbank was unbundled as a result. The company, which is currently mostly located in South Africa, provides sponsorship and financial assistance to South African colleges.
Old Mutual expanded its African operations in 2013 by acquiring Provident Life Assurance in Ghana and Oceanic Life in Nigeria. In 2013, Old Mutual purchased the Fairheads Trust Company, one of South Africa’s oldest trust firms, and renamed it the Old Mutual Wealth Trust Company.
Old Mutual celebrated its 170th anniversary in May 2015. Apart from running the business, Old Mutual South Africa now gives out a number of bursaries to outstanding matriculants and actuarial students at South African universities every year.
