About the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act No. 108 of 1996), created a single National Prosecution Authority (NPA), which is governed by the National Prosecuting Authority Act (Act No. 32 of 1998).

The Constitution, read with this Act, provides the NPA with the power to institute criminal proceedings on behalf of the State, to carry out any necessary functions incidental to the institution of criminal proceedings and to discontinue criminal proceedings.

The NPA is accountable to Parliament, while the final responsibility for the prosecuting authority lies with the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services.

On a national level, the NPA is headed by the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP). The NDPP is appointed by the President of South Africa for a term of 10 years.

Aspirant Prosecutor Internship Programme

It is an internship programme within the NPA that entails in-service training, which assists law graduates in gaining practical prosecutorial experience.

The programme runs for twelve months, after which the completion thereof enables competent candidates to be appointed at entry-level prosecutorial positions in the NPA.

The programme helps to ensure that qualified prosecutors provide additional prosecutorial capacity in the lower courts.

All aspirant prosecutors will receive a monthly stipend for the duration of the programme. The applicable salary level will depend on the amount of relevant experience that the candidates have.

For example, those who have completed articles will be assessed as having more experience and therefore may be placed at a higher salary than those who have not.

To apply for this programme, you must have a South African LLB degree or equivalent foreign qualification, certified as such by SAQA.

Alternatively, final year LLB students who would have completed the degree before the commencement of the programme are also welcomed. Most importantly, applicants must be South African.

Below are the major subjects that should be included in your LLB degree to apply:

  • Law of Evidence
  • Civil Procedure
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminal Procedure & Interpretation of Statutes

Ultimately, you must indicate the centre where you wish to be trained in the Z83 form under the reference number when you apply. If you have indicated it in the email, please re-apply.

Check the submission deadlines periodically on the NPA website.

How to Apply for NPA Vacancies

All applications must be submitted to the relevant Recruitment Response E-mail as stated in each advert.

Also, remember to quote the reference number of the vacancy you are applying for. You will find this at the end of the advertisement.

Applications must be submitted on a Z83 form which must be fully completed as per the instructions on the form, signed and dated.

If the form is not completed as prescribed, your application will not be accepted. Besides, CVs without a Z83 form will not be accepted.

Only copies of certified required qualifications, identity documents and other listed documents as per the advert, must be included with your application.

Moreover, it’s important to note that all applications must reach the NPA on/or before the closing date. No late applications will be accepted/processed.

If you have not received an acknowledgement of receipt within one week after the closing date, then you can contact the NPA. The NPA reserves the right not to fill any particular position.

Also, if you do not hear from the organisation within three months from the closing date of the advert, please accept that your application was unsuccessful.

On the other hand, successful candidates will be subjected to a security clearance of at least confidential. Appointment to this position will be provisional, pending the issue of security clearance.

Also, the social media accounts of shortlisted applicants may be accessed. A valid driver’s license will be a requirement where applicable.
